On the margins of the Davos Forum Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held meetings with the President of the European Investment Bank Werner Hoyer and the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso.

The parties discussed the current economic situation in Belarus and the country’s prospects for quitting the recession. This is absolutely unattainable without systemic political and economic reforms. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya noted that her economic team is already working on reform projects and invited the Banks to support the efforts by providing experts and expertise in preparing documents.

Leaders of the Banks assured Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya they had stopped all projects with Lukashenka’s regime and would continue supporting Belarusians, in particular small and medium businesses that moved to EU countries to flee the repression in Belarus. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya noted that support for Belarusian businesses abroad is critical for the new Belarus, as these companies will return to Belarus after the changes. The National Leader of Belarus suggested developing a dedicated aid program for Belarus, as opportunities for work inside the country are extremely limited. In particular, the parties discussed the involvement of the EIB and the EBRD in the launch of joint projects with the European Commission to support the relocated Belarusian businesses.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya invited the EIB and the EBRD to reestablish operations in Belarus after the democratic transition.
