In August, the residents of Coevorden, led by Mayor Bert Boumeester, condemned the actions of the security forces and the falsification of elections, and also supported the Belarusian people.
In December and February, a white-red-white flag fluttered over the building of the city hall of Coevorden, hung out by the mayor in solidarity with Belarus.
On February 7, the city hosted a conference on the situation in Belarus. It discussed opportunities to help democratic activists and the country as a whole. The conference was attended by representatives of the local authorities, civil society of Belarus and Germany, as well as European media from PEN International and human rights defenders from Amnesty / Libereco.
On March 8, the residents of Coevorden, with the support of the municipality, conveyed their special greetings to the brave women of Brest. The Dutch are planning to further support the Belarusians.
Activists from Coevorden will invite Belarusian women to public discussions. The councilors of the municipality will send letters to political prisoners from Brest and will name one of the important city objects in honor of the twin cities, and will also accept Belarusian activists on a long-term basis within the framework of the Shelter City project.
